Labour Party membership issues hit national headlines

London, 12 April

Labour Party leader Tony Blair is to write to more than 40,000 former Labour Party members asking them to rejoin according to a front-page report in today’s Guardian newspaper.

This is the first positive outcome from the Labour Party leadership in response to a campaign launched by the new  'grass-roots' organisation Save the Labour Party (STLP) to revive interest in Labour Party membership ahead of this year’s Euro/regional and local).

Today’s Guardian report represents a significant development for the fledgling STLP campaign. The report was triggered by a sample survey of local labour party membership figures in eight parliamentary constituencies in four Labour Party regions around Britain.

Peter Kenyon, chair of STLP, said: “It is vital that the Leadership revives interest in the Labour Party as an active mass membership political organisation. This will not only improve Labour’s prospects in June, but strengthen our electoral prospects for a third term in government.”

Since its first AGM in Manchester at the end of November last year, STLP has established a website www.savethelabourparty.org and recruited some 135 members from around Britain. It is offering facilities for all 600+ constituency parties to publicise resolutions of current interest.

Earlier this month Labour MPs were invited to join STLP’s campaign.
