Resolution passed by Weston-super-Mare CLP No.2909 at its November 2004 meeting

Gambling Bill

"Weston CLP deplores the introduction of any new Gaming Laws which could facilitate the introduction of excessive amounts of Casinos throughout the land. We believe that the other points below should be taken into account.

1. The existing casinos are sufficient to satisfy public demand and believe that to introduce more of these establishments could result in a large increase in gambling addiction.

2. We believe that the government proposals inherent in the new bill have not been sufficiently thought through and that the likely impact on the poorer members of society has not been fully investigated.

3. The clauses in the bill designed to prevent children from access to gaming machines is too inclusive and that it will adversely affect existing businesses which appropriately police their own activities and could well close down perfectly law-abiding small businesses to the detriment of jobs in those areas affected.

4. We do not believe that a Labour Government should be contemplating any reforms to the existing gaming laws which will allow the influx of foreign companies and which will allow excessive profits for the few to the detriment of the many.

5. Because this reform was not included in the last two Labour Manifestos we think that this measure should be dropped. It does not attract public support is a source of deep concern to many Labour Party members and Labour backbenchers and as such will only serve to increase the antipathy between the grassroots and the leadership.
