21st Century Party CLPD model resolution SUGGESTED RESPONSE TO THE LABOUR PARTY 21st CENTURY PARTY CONSULATION FROM CAMPAIGN FOR LABOUR PARTY DEMOCRACY BEING CIRCULATED BY SAVE THE LABOUR PARTY FOR INFORMATION AND POSSIBLE USE. A few weeks ago Save the Labour Party sent out a letter to members suggesting that they participate in the 21st Century Party consultation about the future shape of the Labour Party -preferably through their BLP or CLP. STLP works in co-operation with other bodies with similar aims. We have now received some suggested responses from CLPD which were also agreed at their recent AGM. Please note that the Party consultation has been extended to the end of March 2004. Ann Black, a member of STLP who is on the Labour NEC, suggests that you re-phrase the notes in your own words. 1.The supreme body within each Constituency Labour Party(CLP) should be the General Committee (G.C). The G.C.’s federal delegate structure gives a proper voice both to the CLPs,ward branches and to its affiliated organisations. 2. The role of each CLP’s executive committee is to discharge organisational functions under the overall direction of the G.C. 3. Reducing the status or frequency of G.C. meetings would weaken the Party’s organised activist base. 4. Both G.C.s and ward branches should normally meet monthly, in order to enable members to respond to current events and to be able to have the fullest say in the Party’s direction. 5. Both G.C. and ward branch meetings agendas should regularly include space for political debate and speakers. 6. GC meetings should normally be open to attendance by any member of the CLP. 7.CLP G.C.s, together with the Party’s national affiliates should, in future, be able to submit amendments to final stage National Policy Forum policy documents being sent for debate and decision by the Party’s Annual Conference. Constitutional amendments to this effect are already on the agenda for the 2004 Annual Conference. Please send your responses to: N.E.C.
